History / Inspiration
Former professional boxer, Stanley Garcia, founded the East Oakland Boxing Association in 1987 holding the belief that boxing had kept him positively engaged with the community and off the streets. Twenty-six years later, EOBA continues to provide a safe and nurturing environment for neighborhood children with few after school options.
Throughout the years, EOBA has served over 30,000 Oakland youth and their families. With the mission of providing youth a space where they can feel safe and secure, achieve success in school, learn life skills, and build self-esteem, the organization is a lot more about discipline than fighting. All programs are free to the approximately one hundred kids, ages 5 through 20, who visit the center daily.
About its role in the community, Neighborhood Services Supervisor Joe Devries said, “When people think of boxing, they usually think of fighting. But at the East Oakland Boxing Association it’s anything but. It’s a safe haven.’” [via SFGate.]
